Indian literature is considered to be the oldest in the world. Vedas are the oldest books in the world. Originally Indian literature had the tradition of being oral. India has 22 officially recognized languages, and a huge variety of literature has been produced in these languages over the years. In Indian literature, oral and written forms are both important. Devotional Hindu drama, poetry and songs span the subcontinent. The Mahabharata is said to be the longest poem in the world at 100,000 verses strong. The Mahabharata is eight times longer than Homer’s two epics (the Illiad and the Odyssey) combined.
